چکیده

Using information from a recent Rb two-color photoassociation experiment, we evaluate the merits of fountain clocks based on Rb and Rb isotopes as alternatives to Cs and find that they offer significant advantages. In the case of Rb the collisionally induced fractional frequency shift is 15 times smaller than for Cs. This small shift is associated with a small difference in the triplet and singlet scattering lengths for Rb. For Rb, the shift produced by the two m f50 clock states may have opposite signs allowing the shift to be eliminated by controlling the relative populations of these states. We also present collision quantities relevant to atomic fountain clocks containing multiply launched groups of atoms, and for evaporative cooling of Rb atoms. @S1050-2947~97!50312-X#

Cold Atom Clocks and Applications

This paper describes advances in microwave frequency standards using laser-cooled atoms at BNM-SYRTE. First, recent improvements of the 133 Cs and 87 Rb atomic fountains are described. Thanks to the routine use of a cryogenic sapphire oscillator as an ultra-stable local frequency reference, a fountain frequency instability of 1.6 × 10 −14 τ −1/2 where τ is the measurement time in seconds is mea...

Double-resonance spectroscopy in Rubidium vapour-cells for high performance and miniature atomic clocks

We report our studies on using microwave-optical double-resonance (DR) spectroscopy for a high-performance Rb vapour-cell atomic clock in view of future industrial applications. The clock physics package is very compact with a total volume of only 0.8 dm. It contains a recently in-house developed magnetron-type cavity and a Rb vapour cell. A homedmade frequency-stabilized laser system with an i...

A polarisation spectrometer locked diode laser for trapping cold atoms

We have modelled and used polarisation spectroscopy to lock a very compact, high-performance extended cavity diode 85 Ž X . laser system to the Rb Fs3 to F s4 transition. The laser has a linewidth of 135 kHz. Using this system we have trapped and cooled 1.5=10 Rb atoms in a magneto-optical trap. Atoms remained continuously trapped in the MOT for several minutes. q 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All...

Dynamics of a cold trapped ion in a Bose-Einstein condensate.

We investigate the interaction of a laser-cooled trapped ion (Ba+ or Rb+) with an optically confined ⁸⁷Rb Bose-Einstein condensate. The system features interesting dynamics of the ion and the atom cloud as determined by their collisions and their motion in their respective traps. Elastic as well as inelastic processes are observed and their respective cross sections are determined. We demonstra...

Two-particle quantum interference in tunnel-coupled optical tweezers.

The quantum statistics of atoms is typically observed in the behavior of an ensemble via macroscopic observables. However, quantum statistics modifies the behavior of even two particles. Here, we demonstrate near-complete control over all the internal and external degrees of freedom of two laser-cooled (87)Rb atoms trapped in two optical tweezers. This controllability allows us to observe signa...
